IPv6 Practice

future-city_editedThe Internet’s supply of IP version 4 addresses is nearing exhaustion. All ISPs are happy to provide IPv6 for free and IPv4 at a cost.  The organization responsible for allocating IPv4 networks to Regional Internet Registries (RIRs), IANA, ran out in late January 2011. The RIR that serves the Asia-Pacific region ran out in mid-April. The RIR that serves Europe will likely run out this summer. These events herald the beginning of a long transition to the new version of the Internet Protocol, IPv6.

Over time, the number of IPv6-based users on the Internet have increased and —soon from now—that they make up the majority of the Internet. For the time being, the two protocols will coexist on the Internet, entailing the use of IPv4–IPv6 transition technologies.
